About Rob Anderson

Rob started his career by studying Heavy Current Electrical Engineering. After qualifying, he worked in the construction industry and spent nine years mainly in the petroleum and paper sectors of the industry.

When the problem of having to move location to wherever projects were happening started impacting on the family, he joined a consulting practice.

Fourteen years later he decided to start his own practice, which he ran for 20 years before passing the baton to the staff and new owner.

It was during this time that the need for secure living and the idea of secure housing estates started and grew.

Rob took the opportunity to become involved and spent many hours studying, networking and investigating, in order to understand all aspects of the requirements.

Rob is registered as a Professional Engineer, a Fellow of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, a Registered Professional Construction Project Manager, and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors.
Rob is currently living in the United Kingdom and continues to work in the consulting engineering profession.

Rob has a dream to see the provision of private security being recognised as an engineering science.

What Secure by Design readers say

Thoroughly enjoyed your book. A lot of insight and many things I had not considered. Definitely food for thought and further reading on certain topics. Also excellent for a reference manual.

"I am an electrical engineer who became interested in the provision of electronic security systems. I soon realised that the security solution – electronics, operation, maintenance, and the interaction with the guarding staff – needs to be treated as a whole picture."

– Rob Anderson Pr Eng, MIET | Secure by Design Author

"I’ve been personally involved in security consultations in more than 70 estates, and I’ve generally found that not only is there a problem in setting standards, but there’s also the absence of a formal design approach to security provision. There is a need to develop standard terminology so that communication of ideas and processes is easily conducted between the parties involved. This inspired me to write the handbook, Secure by Design: A Guide to Residential Estate Security"
